North of Auckland, New Zealand

After our visit to the Matakana Village Farmer’s Market we took drive to the coast. Along the way we passed small farms that grow specialty produce like heirloom tomatoes, raspberries, blueberries and feijoa fruit. For those unfamiliar with the feijoa, sometimes called the pineapple guava or the guavasteen, it is a green fruit about the size of a kiwi with a rind similar to a citrus fruit. It’s flavor is sort of sour-lime. They make semi-sweet and dry sparkling wines out of the fruit in a town near Matakana. Where the road ends and the water begins is called Omaha Beach.
